The 38th Bali Kites Festival(s) 2017
Annual Festival of Traditional Kites in Bali
The Bali Kites Festival is a series of kiting events that take place annually between July and August (sometimes through October), notably at the start of the windy season. The kite festivals are one of Bali’s major provincial calendar highlights presenting unique cultural scenes on par with the preceding the Bali Arts Festival.
The festival is slated for various dates, with main events customarily taking place along the eastern coast of Padanggalak, just north of Sanur.
Hundreds of competing kite troupes gather from all over the island to pilot their traditional kites, alongside international teams with modern kites in various shapes and sizes.
Makepung Buffalo Race
Bali has a wealth of bull races. This racing tradition is a large deal in the town of Jembrana, Negara regency, even taking on the official championships designation as the Governor's Cup or 'Piala Bupati'. The festival usually kicks off with various heats around the coastal race tracks of Jembrana in the month of July, leading up to the finals and festivities occurring mid-November. The tradition traces back to the legacies of the Jembrana farmers, and during the festivities various other art forms of the locality are performed as well, such as bull fashion shows and Jegog bamboo orchestras.
